From swar to raag
Pitch accuracy is the foundation. Saptak work, alankaars, and short swar exercises prepare the ear and voice for the characteristic movement of a raag. Study the written structure together with its pakad and careful listening.
Taal, tempo, and layakari
Do not treat taal as a number of beats alone. Speak and clap its divisions, tali, khali, and theka before practising dugun, tigun, and chaugun. This builds a dependable link between counting and singing.
- Keep a steady base tempo before increasing speed
- Practise short patterns accurately instead of long patterns carelessly
- Write and speak notation before singing difficult passages
Approaching taan and gamak
Taan and gamak require clean pitch, controlled breath, and respect for the raag's identity. Begin with short patterns at a slow tempo and increase speed only when the notes remain clear. Written examples work best with listening and teacher correction.
